On March 30, 2026, Dauphin County ASPIRE partnered with Caitlin’s Smiles to provide a QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training at the Caitlin’s Smiles office. Led by ASPIRE co-founder Govan Martin, the session equipped 20 participants with the knowledge and tools needed to recognize the warning signs of suicide and respond effectively to someone in crisis.
QPR is a nationally recognized suicide prevention training program that teaches participants how to Question someone about suicidal thoughts, Persuade them to seek help, and Refer them to appropriate resources. The training helps build awareness, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and empowers everyday community members to act as “gatekeepers” who can identify warning signs and help connect individuals with lifesaving support. Participants also learned how to offer hope and access both local and national resources for assistance.
The training was hosted by Caitlin’s Smiles, a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting children facing serious illness through the power of creativity and kindness. Through programs such as arts and crafts activities, interactive experiences, and joyful connections, Caitlin’s Smiles works to bring smiles to children and their families during challenging times. ASPIRE continues to expand access to suicide prevention education across Dauphin County by offering QPR trainings to community groups, organizations, and residents who want to make a difference. By empowering more individuals with these skills, ASPIRE is helping build a stronger network of support for those experiencing mental health challenges.
